- FYI: The 2009 Washinton Legislature passed a law requiring the Building Code Council to adopt a rule requiring installation of Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitors in homes. This rule will be in effect and all new construction must conform by July 1, 2010. It’s also possible that sellers will be required to install the monitors prior to a buyer taking occupancy. It is also likely that landlords will be required to install carbon monoxide monitors not later than January 1, 2013. Specific requirements will depend on the language of the rule. When it’s all settled, I will let you know the outcome. HOWEVER, this legislation emphasizes that our homes should be equipped with CO monitors. Over 20,000 people are treated annually in emergency rooms, nationwide, for carbon monoxide poisoning and approximately 500 die. In Washington, more than 1000 people suffered from poisoning and 8 died after the 2006 windstorm. A Carbon Monoxide monitor can cost less than $50 and could save your life and the lives of your loved ones. CO cannot be detected by human senses and can pass through garage and apartment walls.
